No-exam life insurance

Who gets approved without an exam, how accelerated underwriting actually works, and what happens if your application requires medical testing.

Today's companies frequently feature fast underwriting: for applicants meeting age and amount thresholds, they approve based on your application, medication records, vehicle records, and other data—skipping the medical exam. Approval sometimes takes just a day. Your quotes here show whether an exam is necessary, likely, or not needed for that plan.

What it changes

Skipping the exam does not skip underwriting. Your answers are checked thoroughly; policies issued on untrue information can be challenged within the first two years. If the carrier's search of your records raises concerns, they may still ask for testing; you decide whether to proceed.

Who tends to qualify

Generally applicants under about 55-60 requesting coverage under the carrier's accelerated limits, with no serious past medical issues and no tobacco use in the past year or longer. If you recently had a doctor visit with lab work, carriers sometimes use those results instead of their own exam.

If testing is required, plan for a brief appointment with a paramedic—usually 20 to 30 minutes—at your home, workplace or another spot near you. There is no cost. Some people find that exam results actually move them into a better rate class, so testing is sometimes beneficial.
